SafeDive

Safety information for maritime tourism

Information for maritime activity planning

SafeDive explores an advisory application for maritime tourism activities. Its focus is how relevant information could be presented so that a user can understand the context of an activity and the limits of the information available.

The concept is about supporting planning and awareness. It does not assume that software can determine whether a particular person, vessel or activity is safe.

Make freshness, location and uncertainty visible

A useful prototype would make the source, time and location of information clear. Evaluation could ask whether users notice stale or missing data, distinguish a general advisory from a location-specific observation and understand what an alert does and does not mean.

Tests should also consider interrupted connectivity and a change in plans after information was downloaded. An apparently reassuring screen should not conceal that the device has stopped receiving updates.

An advisory concept with operational limits

SafeDive is a research concept, with no validated safety service or operational deployment presented here. Professional judgement, local requirements and emergency procedures remain outside the authority of a general advisory interface. To discuss research, identify the activity, intended users, trusted information sources and decisions the application is meant to support.
