Edge Computing & IoT Systems

Software that works within real operating limits

Design around the device’s actual environment

Edge and IoT software needs a clear account of power, connectivity, processing and maintenance constraints. The device’s local responsibilities should remain understandable when the central platform is unavailable.

We focus on data flows and software behaviour, with hardware selection and physical installation responsibilities agreed for each scope.

Connect measurements with a dependable workflow

Work can cover telemetry interfaces, local analytics, offline behaviour and integration with a monitoring platform. A useful prototype preserves device identity, observation time and measurement quality as information moves between systems.

The aim is to make each observation interpretable, including when it is incomplete, delayed or unavailable.

Test failure and recovery as well as normal operation

An evaluation plan should cover interruptions, restarts, lost observations and reconnection. It should ask what the device retains, what it discards and how the platform distinguishes current information from older buffered events.

Testing also needs defined processing and communication budgets. Our engineering note on interrupted connectivity sets out a practical starting approach.

Define the boundaries before integration

Describe the device setting, authorised data sources, expected connection patterns and actions that must remain under human or central control. An initial architecture discussion should identify what can safely happen locally and which failure behaviour needs a dedicated test.
