Designing edge systems for interrupted connectivity

Designing edge systems for interrupted connectivity

Expect the connection to fail

Remote devices may lose connectivity, restart unexpectedly or operate with limited power. Define what a device must do locally when the central platform is unavailable.

Preserve the meaning of the data

Timestamps, device identity, measurement units and quality indicators matter as much as the value itself. A monitoring platform should distinguish a stale measurement from a current one.

Plan recovery deliberately

Buffering, retries and reconnection rules should avoid duplicate events or uncontrolled bursts of traffic. Test recovery using the same constraints expected in operation.

Keep control responsibilities clear

Decide which actions can run locally and which require approval or central coordination. A monitoring prototype is not automatically a validated control or safety system.

Let’s discuss your next challenge

Tell us about the problem, your operating environment and what success would look like. We can discuss a suitable research or development approach.
